IPR Showdown Over Syria | National Catholic Reporter by MSW.  MGB: I agree with Robert.  It is understandable that an Argentine Pope might resent the Pax Americana, especially given the bad history of the US in his corner of the world in its support for dictators who support US economic interests over the rights of local workers.  Still, this is not a debate about a banana republic.  It is about war crimes of the worst variety (not that some of the torture carried out at American direction was not a war crime as well).  This is one time where American power is coming in handy - and the threat of attack will make sure the process continues to its natural conclusion.  Indeed, the only way for Assad to keep power now, as supported by the Syriac Patriarch, is for the peace deal to continue on to a negotiated truce.
