What the election is telling us about the church in this country

What the election is telling us about the church in this country

This column shows that the Church (and Michael Sean) are divorced from reality. If natural law is based on reason, rather than teaching or authority, everything is negotiable. To say authority can trump reason is a logical fallacy. The bishops who are speaking out about abortion make no appeal to reason. Reason must be based in  reality - and the reality in America is that due process provisions of the constitution make legal status for the unborn impossible. It is not a legal issue, it is election rhetoric.

Biden, like many Catholics, accepts the legal realities.  Reality cares little for the opinions of the hierarchy. After the election, it is incumbent on  Biden to explain reality to the Bishops. Catholic voters have had enough of their bluster.

The bishops who rely on authority have a problem with Francis and are sure that the next pope will come soon and be more a John Paul than a Francis. They ignore the import of the Council of Cardinals, who essentially function as national patriarchs Francis considers himself one of them, rather than above them. Their idea of an infallible Magisterium is history. Francis never refers to it in his letters. He merely preaches the Gospel. He is elevating bishops who do the same.

Any bishop who thinks he can outlast these changes is whistling past the graveyard. Abortion to them is a dog whistle, not about Trump, but about Francis. Cardinal Sean is getting old, but Cardinals Blaise and Wilton stand ready to replace him. None of those who speak out for Trump are on the list.

The Democrats will have the advantage. Let's see if they use it to capitalize on redistricting or create new ways to do it. They may do both, but reform will wait to the last possible minute. People vote in PR, but they have many parties to pick from. It is the system that causes people not to vote. It is not a matter of individual virtue. Proportional representation would solve the problem of both non-voting and redistricting, It also makes government more complicated because when everyone is represented, compromise is more difficult.

Warnock should win, because Biden will win Georgia (don't include GOP push polls in the average). Abrams should be DNC Chair. Has she been a National Committee Member? That is usually a job requirement.

Nuts and granola Catholics will vote Biden. Others may or may not follow what the bishop says. It matters more to them than an editorial in the daily paper. People are locked in. The question in the Midwest is "who will be too sick to vote next week?" This is true in Nebraska and Ohio, although moderate Ohio Republicans will follow Kasich to the polls.

Jones-Day knows to cover both sides of the street. They also know that Trump is doomed, even if he were to win.

The way to stop trafficking is to offer opportunity to those who would sell their daughters. Spending any time watching African TV shows how pervasive the desire to go to America is - at all costs. This is where the message is needed.

Ratzinger read the tea leaves when he said being gay is disordered. Not saying so has only one logical conclusion: marriage equality. The same is true about ordaining women to the deaconate.

Color me shocked that Evangelic pop musicians release pro-Trump songs,

Election anxiety takes hold

Election anxiety takes hold

That Trump is a blithering and irascible idiot is the reason for his political demise. They are not voting for Biden (or against him because of pelvic issues  unless they would never vote for any Democrat).

The pandemic has been politicized, but only his bluster is his fault. No more or less people died because of anything Trump said. The CDC messed this up on their own. Solidarity does not stop people from sneezing on each other and writing it off to "allergies." Schools opening normally would have spread immunity. MSW has fallen for a trope. Shame on Biden and his people for highlighting it,

Most people in the know realize that Trump cares nothing about any issue other than presidential immunity to prosecution - and he is wrong on that one. Expect an indictment one week from today, Even if he wins, SDNY will indict Rudi. If he loses, it will be sooner than later. Once the Court denies his last appeal, Vance will also indict. A deal is likely being negotiated, which makes Trump's stump speech all the more cynical. He knows the walls are closing in. If he looks calm, he is scared to death. Ever the liar, right to the end.

There is a 50-50 chance Comey-Barrett is a Gorsuch, not a Scalia. There is a 100% chance that Biden will get 2 pics, one being Thomas.

Weigel being wrong on anything is not news.

Wilton needed to be here to get the hat, which is why he was moved here. Six of one...

The minimum wage going up raises all boats below the middle management level. Trump voters are the ones we need to convince, not future middle managers. The same is true with education on economic liberty (and social liberty). Many are not for both. Especially middle management.  Also on warming.

The question on retraining workers dovetails on whether families want to move (or management wants to move there). Heavy equipment operators need no retraining, but will have to move.

There will be a lot of COVID  hospitalization in the next week. Not Trump's fault, but that does not stop blame. Trump may not even win Wyoming. His voters may be too sick to vote.

Wisdom out of the mouths of babes....and they are not wrong. Of course, there will be plenty of nastiness from the other side when Harris is POTUS.

There is little heart disease in France, but lots more pancreatic cancer.

EWTN, National Catholic Register shill for Trump by twisting Catholic teaching

EWTN, National Catholic Register shill for Trump by twisting Catholic teaching

When you know you are selling garbage, you have no excuse for smelling like garbage. Oddly, the positions they take probably harm Trump more than Trump harms them, especially when everyone knows he is only pretending to be pro-life. The issue is just not important enough to Trump not to join the lie. Nothing is funnier than people who believe a Council of the Church is a liberal heresy supporting a libertine. The only thing that unites them is profound commitment to wealth inequality - the notion that the poor not only deserve to be poor, but that they are a valuable resource to be exploited by their betters. This causes more abortions than it prevents. That the USCCB is in on this farce is beyond disgusting.

Not a knockout, but Biden (and the moderator) won the final debate

Not a knockout, but Biden (and the moderator) won the final debate

Sometimes the mute button shows the true character of the person, especially when they are not speaking. Trump looks every inch the fascist with the sound down. Almost half of likely voters will have had their votes counted before the polls closed and the vast majority will be for Joe, gaffes and all.  People who loathe Trump could not stand watching him in the debate. That would be most people.

Election day will be even worse for Trump. His base is about to be very sick. Not his fault, because masks are not a factor in how the virus is spread - indoor sneezes from "seasonal allergies" by people you know. Trump is only responsible for his affect, which is really what people are voting against.

Trump is not a nice guy nor an honest broker. Especially on Russia. I am no fan of anyone having to release their tax returns, from Donald Trump to Michael Sean Winters. On Trump, prosecutors already have them. Juries will soon.

Trump is not totally wrong on migrants. Talk to any immigration lawyer. Most asylees really want a better life and family reunification. Few, if any, are fleeing anything.

Trump is right, the Democrats really do want to kill private insurance. A well-designed public option (which includes anyone who is denied coverage) will do so as certainly as single-payer. I have no problem with that at all.

Trump believes he is better on race because he freed non-violent drug offenders from prison. This is because he thinks all Black men are criminals.

The wealthy need skin in the game on warming. Cap damages on flood insurance and they will get really interested, really fast. They like having an expensive beach getaway. If Joe can get this done, he will have saved the planet,

Biden needs to talk about fracking in terms of Oklahoma being an earthquake zone. Until it starts collapsing, no one will care, not even in Oklahoma. Natural gas is a clean fuel and the best option, short of everyone having an induction cook top. People never react until after a crisis. We evolved that way.

We also evolved to like strongmen, but Trump is more parlor pink than strongman. We know how to deal with those too. The bidding is closed in this game. We bid No Trump.

Trump supporter foolishness is not news. Neither is Bob Barr at a prayer breakfast. The whole prayer breakfast concept was started by the protestant fundamentalists. Google "C Street."

The seamless garment approach is a way to co-opt the issue from the Republicans. It is a response, not an initiative, the to GOP pro-life scam. Standing for life is not enough. The Church needs to be an example to other employers by paying a just wage (add a child, pay goes up $12,000 a year) and make a tax credit for doing it item one on their legislative agenda.

It also needs to close the office of pro-life activities, which is a Republican front group. The bishops are either misinformed are part of the fraud that banning abortion is constitutionally possible in the United States. There is no scenario to treat abortion as infanticide that does not involve recording all pregnancies and investigating their loss - or punishing anyone involved in the infanticide, including the mother.

The sovereign is responsible for the safety of the realm under social contract theory. The people are now the sovereign and inherit that duty. A person who cannot be reformed needs to be euthanized. Indeed, most of the guilty would prefer that to being locked in a room for 23.5 hours a day until they die. Restorative justice is good for the victim's family, but does not relieve society of the responsibility of preventing danger. That is also why some abortions are justified, especially in later trimesters.

Biden's lack of Obama-level support may have changed since putting Harris on the ticket. The concern many have is his age. South Texas Republicans are still grateful to Reagan for amnesty. They respect Bush for trying for it, regardless of the overt racism of James Sensenbrenner in stopping it. Had W succeeded, he would have put Latinos in the GOP column forever.

There is nothing meritocratic in putting rich kids in college who should not be there.

The War of 1812 was all about trying to absorb Canada into the United States. People remember things like that, as well as Catholic opposition to democracy in general and rights to conscience in the face of religious power in particular. The latter is still an issue regarding contraception and gay marriage by Catholic employees (although Francis is moving in the right direction).

Debate prediction: a flailing Trump

Debate prediction: a flailing Trump

Trump does not have the words to tell herd immunity from everyone being exposed already and getting sick or not (which is not herd immunity, it is a virus burning out). SARS-CoV-1 burnt out just before the vaccine was ready. This one likely will too, but 200,000 more Americans will die before it does. This is not because of Trump, but because no one is telling people with "seasonal allergies" to stay home. A competent White House would have.

Trump cannot win by playing to his base, but he knows no other game and is incapable of learning a new one. Trump attacked Fauci on a red meet call, not where it matters. He does not realize that his base has leaks. Even if he did, he has no ability to keep his cards closer to his vest.

Nothing Trump will do in this debate is noteworthy (unless he behaves like an adult). His ticket was doomed the moment the fly landed on Pence's head.  His fate is already sealed. Once early voting results are announced, it will be mathematically impossible for Trump to win There will be no drawn out drama. The only thing Biden needs to do in the first 100 days is not be Donald Trump.

It saddens me that the Church of Spokane has fallen on such touch times. He is also shouting at the wind. Washington State is deep blue. If he is making a play for Archbishop, I am not sure how this helps.

Last Spring, which seems like forever ago, I did a few pieces on the cultural theory of COVID-19 (including libertarianism). Other essays are  Pandemics as a religious experience    The moral hazard of wearing and not wearing masks  Science or (and of) fear. There is more to libertarianism than crony capitalism. Without it, society is simply unleavened bread.

There is a tradition of not locking up leaders of the opposing party, criminalizing foreign policy or sending people to jail for insurance fraud. The question on Trump is whether he will be pardoned before he takes a deal. The entertaining piece will be what happens to his stuff. He is lucky he has a pension, or else he would have to flea to Russia to eat. As for Rudi, he may face serious prison time for espionage - although he will likely only be prosecuted for being an unregistered foreign agent. He should plead out to a felony and stay out of politics for the rest of his life.

Gerrymandering has a long history in U.S. politics. Good luck fixing it. If the GOP is lucky, there will be a rise in non-partisan commissions, although they may not survive regardless. Non-partisanship will be how social libertarian and economic libertarian democratic parties divide up the bones of the GOP.

The Sumter County results will be buried. Lots of counties are in the same boat. It will be hard for the networks to not call the race before the polls close in California. In Florida, the Cuban and Puerto Rican votes are predictable. It is the Mexican-American vote that is doubtful. 1986 still inspires loyalty to the GOP. We will see if it still does. I am thinking no.

As for abortion among Latino voters, it is no more an issue than it ever was or was not. The reality is, while their are strong feelings about it, there is absolutely no correlation between voting pro-life or pro-choice on the legality of abortion, There never will be. Too bad no one really covers that part of the issue.

Trump actually tried the radical protectionist approach, although he did it with all the finesse of a used care salesman on a Friday afternoon before happy hour. The rising COVID hospitalization rate in Trump country, which is not Trump's fault.  The CDC never wanted to say that it spreads as a cold. By election day, everyone will know someone who got sick and many will know someone who died.

Clinton was a lousy candidate. Defending partial birth abortion, assuming men and youth who voted for Obama would come out for her and selecting a white man from Virginia are why she lost. Biden is last call for the Trump-Clinton generation. Luckily, Biden chose well for Vice President.

Pope needs transparency, zero tolerance to end Vatican's financial corruption

Pope needs transparency, zero tolerance to end Vatican's financial corruption

I don't believe in zero tolerance on anything. Rules need to not be substituted for at least some amount of rationality. That said, the clergy should not handle the money in the Church, from the Parish to the Vatican. It is not their money, it is ours and we should elect our own stewards, either directly or indirectly. The comment about things getting worse because of the disclosures proves that the concern of the clergy is not rectitude, it is discovery. The laity would have the same problem, but it would not be the same kind of betrayal. "Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops." (Luke 12:3)

Shea explains how politics, culture distort our understanding of Catholicism

Shea explains how politics, culture distort our understanding of Catholicism

Any cursory reading of the responses on Facebook to suggestions that economic justice is the solution to abortion shows that Shea is spot on. Conservatives in the pro-life movement really do believe that taxation is theft and that charity cannot be mandatory, especially on NCR and America Magazines pages. Anti-abortion callers to my online radio show also confirm this. They believe that the solution to abortion is not money, but behavior. They refuse to pay for the results of other people's sexuality. At heart, they really do want to control women's bodies. At heart, the abortion debate, for them, really is about sex and the position of women in society. Feminists are correct in their response to their arguments. MSW needs to read the comments on his feed.

Catholic Social teaching is a response to Marx, but it is also a misunderstanding of Marx. Marx also accepted the social democracy which is the essence of Catholic teaching to him. Marxism is not revolution or bust, but social democracy is neither revolution or a realistic assessment of the human relations typified by Capitalism. Modern welfare economics mirrors what he says in its description of monopsony in the labor market. At heart, even monopsonist competition is exploitation of the worker. Solutions can be both/and, but the truth cannot be.

Being a pro-life Republican is to fall for the argument that abortion can be treated like infanticide without punishing the mother or the state having to investigate each pregnancy loss (which is not constitutionally correct). They consider anyone who does not share their belief to be pro-choice. They are correct in their assessment, although because they want to not investigate all pregnancy loss or punish mothers, they are essentially pro-choice too.

Society cannot punish abortion like infanticide and only sanction Planned Parenthood. No one says that their movement is well thought out. The seamless garment of life is not on their agenda - and being pro-life is their agenda item. Being a Democrat for Life is pro-choice lite. They are not wrong. You are either with them or against them.

As to how God is seen or not seen as a means to an end, this comes from the argument that God ought to be worshiped for Their own selves, rather than as a fulfillment of our natures. This argument ignores the humility of God. He does not need our worship. Our best outcome is to cooperate with Their will, for our sake's, not for God's.

Links for 10/15/20

Not listening to Donald Trump is not cause for concern. I try to practice this as much as I am able. Taking official notice of the DoJ position on the Affordable Care Act case is not something she would allow. Also, unless MSW claims he is confident that she will preserve gay marriage and abortion rights and that it deserves a yes vote, no one who is likely to confirm her will change their minds.  The horse is dead. Quit beating it.

Neither Bob Barr nor Judge Barrett's opinion on Catholicism matters. They are neither Catholic leaders, theologians or even Catholic authors. That horse is dead too. Private to MSW: try commenting on Catholic authors on the Left who you are less known but say important things. Also, read us first - especially when we talk about you. I have more than one blog and none neither of them say anything about your column (or only rarely, but it is because I have a point).

We only know the results that have been published. Campaigns never publish internal polling results and news outlets only publish that which is consistent with their narrative. That Latino faith preferences are not published simply means they are not considered a story. They may or may not be asking. If you care, have NCR pay for a poll, but get a professional (like me) to do the questions). The Catholic News Agency should always be ignored. Nothing said by or about them is relevant.

Whether someone who is newly registered has changed their minds or is the result of GOP election fraud is a cause for concern and ballot challenging to make sure the same person is not voting twice in different places. The Red States are experiencing a COVID crisis. Melania had the real thing (sever fatigue - she is too young for the SARS2 symptoms). In about 2 weeks, there will be a lot of very sick older Midwestern voters. Those who got better by then won't be voting for Trump. They may even stay home and therefore not vote down-ballot.

Just like politicians and judges should be ignored on religion, priests should be ignored on voting. Bishops to. I don't trust most bishops to manage their own diocese. Deacons should do that.

I also don't trust either about medicine. Doctors have not done so well either. Asking people who have actually had the virus shows how it progresses for most people and how it actually spreads. Fauci treated it like Ebola. It does not spread that way.

Anti-racism is not just about academic experience, or even history. It is about how our brains perceive difference automatically. It is about attitude as much as knowledge, which was Zimmerman's point. Most academia suffers from White Privilege, not because of intent but because of the lack thereof.

I know I sound snippy today (and have not yet had my coffee), but I stand by every word.

Down-ballot races are just as important for common good as presidential race

Down-ballot races are just as important for common good as presidential race

539 contains Republican push polls in the average. Take these out and the GOP loss is huge. This time, Schumer may be able to snag enough Republicans to get to 60 votes, which gets him 62. Down ballot will look very good, although with half of the states in COVID land, anything can happen. If younger people, who don't get as sick, turn out, the GOP may cease to exist.

Courts rule in favor of business because the law is capitalist. Until I see Barrett compared to similar judges on how she rules, I am going to consider this line of argument a canard based on prejudice rather than reality.

On 2020, turnabout is fair play. I hope to see the ERA enacted next year as the 28th Amendment.

Trump is finally realizing that Barr is a fifth columnist. He and Mueller are best buds. They played Trump like a fiddle. Ever see The Sting? Cue Scott Joplin as the Supremes are about to deny Trump's attempts to quash the subpoena for his financial records, which are needed not for an investigation, but the official copies for evidence at his trial. Trump has realized that SDNY cannot be stopped and will get first crack in 3 weeks and one day. If Pence tries a pardon, Cy Vance will simply receive the baton.

If anyone is priggish enough to object to Regneron, then they will soon be joining the angels in Heaven. As for Trump, cases in the Midwest are huge, the CDC never figured out that the leading symptom was "allergies" that last for a week and turn to SARS2 a week later. Trump's bluster and racism are his undoing. Lots of Trump voters in the Midwest are going to be sick on election day - too sick to get to the polls. I hope they ordered their ballots already. Between 100,000 and 200,000 will die in Red States in the next few months of what is normal spread and CDC/WHO malpractice.

Even before the pandemic, growth was slowing and a collapse of rental housing value and Cryptocurrency was going to shock the economy into recession. Oddly, the pandemic prevented this, or at least delayed it. Biden has the perfect solution - raise taxes on speculators and spend the money on consumers. It works every time. It is why Obama's economic miracle started with the American Tax Relief Act in 2013, which increased taxes on the wealthy to Clinton levels. Sadly, the press is economically illiterate. They think tax cuts help. They do not.

The problems with Wilkes-Barre will lessen with age. People forget that the more conservative voters of today will not be around when Millenials, et al, are in prime voting age - and they do vote, thanks to Obama and Sanders.

The old Vatican II counter-revolutionaries have to be noticing the most shocking thing about Francis' writings. They make no attempt to continue the hubris they expect of the papacy. If this is a permanent change, the Church has evolved and will do so with greater speed. This is what Apocalypse means. The revelation of new truth. Even the old time Catholic prophets spoke of renewal in the Church and its focus on improving life for the working family. The Lord makes all things new again and the old clericalism is dying with the St. John Paul bishops.  Papal relativism (truth ex cathedra) is no more.

Barrett's theology may be out of bounds, but not her judicial philosophy

Barrett's theology may be out of bounds, but not her judicial philosophy

The question of her faith is whether she is as orthodox as Nino Scalia and, like Scalia, lets that faith inform her on issues of moral authority. Scalia believed that decisions made at the state level are more sensitive to the moral leaders in the community. The key question is whether Barrett believes the same thing. Whether she is an originalist like Scalia or a textualist like Gorsuch is more important, but may be a distinction without a difference. Most matters before the Court are more about who gets to decide than the merits of the issue or are unanimous.

Box v. Planned Parenthood affirmed the Seventh Circuit. Barrett wanted to rehear the case en banc before the Supreme Court had a shot. It would not have changed the outcome. No one on the Court wants to rehear Roe, nor will they touch gay marriage.

The interesting case is whether Hosanna-Tabor or Title VII controls when cases about firing gay married couples reach the Court (if they do). If the Circuits agree on how these decisions are applied, it may not get to the Supreme Court at all. In the age of Francis, the matter may be moot as bishops with sour grapes over gay marriage age out and are replaced by cooler heads.

In the long run, Joe Biden or Kamala Harris will likely replace Breyer, Thomas and Alito. These things even out. Even this nomination may fall by the wayside as the President falls apart in plain sight, taking the GOP with him. Mike Pence will not withdraw the nomination, but a lame duck session may include some caucus shifting if the Republicans lose very badly in November. Internal campaign polling may give members pause if they feel Trump is dragging them down.

Links for 10/9/20

That Trump is responsible for anyone getting sick may or may not be true. Whomever infected him probably infected the staff a month ago on one of the campaign trips. Trying to explain how the disease spreads to doctors who don't see patients who are not dying is like trying to explain sex to a virgin.

Social Security, Unions (which the GOP fights), the Child and Earned Income Tax Credits (which both sides agree to, but not enough) and Employee Stock Ownership Plans are all part of both social democracy and Catholic Social Teaching. We can certainly go further in this country. I have written a few books about how. MSW and E.J. both have copies.

Southern Democrats were famous for denying the vote to Black and Brown people. Many such citizens still don't have the habit of voting, while the Southern Dems have simply become Republicans, as Johnson predicted when he signed the Voting Rights Act. Job One, with immigration reform, is restoring the parts of the Act that were struck down by the Roberts Court,

Religious Liberty is not really popular in Catholic traditionalist circles. Vatican II was supposed to change that. Like the Civil Rights Act, Dignitatis Humanae did not change hearts. Conservative bishops seek religious power under the guise of liberty. They need to be resisted loudly and clearly from the Catholic media. This also means it is time to write checks to the ACLU.

There is a certain amount of naivete in populism. Marx thought that it would overturn the Capitalist order. It did not. Instead, we got a mix of consumerism and unionism. Populism resists the economic radicalism necessary to get big money out of politics.

The word elitism needs to be retired. It goes back to resistance to the New York Jewish Elite. It became the NY Elite, the Cultural Elite under Quayle, then the Hollywood Elite. It is amazing how people discuss the elites with "berg" or "ner" at the end of their names. Like Desenberg, Bodner or Bindner. Steinberg and Speilberg are also targeted "elites."

Ignatio Montoya, call your office.

Fox News also puts "elite" in scare quotes.

Pence played to GOP base; Harris went for the center in VP debate

Pence played to GOP base; Harris went for the center in VP debate

Thank you for watching this. I took a look 30 minutes in and, after the first response, knew that Pence was doing the indefensible and impossible, justifying the accomplishments of Trump. The fly did a better job.

The killer questions were not asked of Pence: Do you truly believe that the President is sane, which many former officials and doctors have doubted? Why have you not convened the Cabinet and invoked the 25th Amendment? Have you done it in secret? Are you functioning as shadow President? On abortion, do you favor treating abortion as infanticide, with all that implies for investigating all pregnancy losses? (Follow-up by opponent should explain why that has to be the case).

Trump is declining quickly. Pence may be the President and nominee before the month is out, so the killer questions may be useful after all.

Coronavirus is not a Trump mistake, aside from the fact that the White House staff is more concerned with placating Trump than overseeing the government. The CDC is focusing on masks rather than why the spread is out of control (hint: the epidemic of seasonal allergies are mostly COVID-19) If Trump is not in charge, the constitutional chain of command is broken, the very definition of a constitutional crisis. Trump is right about one thing - the virus will disappear - but only after everyone has been exposed. Managing it will not be an issue in January.

Pro-life? Why the Trump campaign is collapsing

Pro-life? Why the Trump campaign is collapsing

There is no Right to Life angle on this story. I have added a fourth possible position on this issue. You can Witness (wishy-washy/passive), try to ban abortion as infanticide, throw money and contraception at families (this is where you find the seamless garment), and the new one - pander about the issue - which combines Witness and threatening infanticide (but not mean it). Guess where Trump and the GOP are. SARS-CoV-2 is not part of the equation. If pro-life means everything, then it means nothing.

Trump will lose because he has spent the last 3 years in election, rather than governing mode. This includes his response to COVID-19, which may kill him too. He is not responsible for the spread however. The CDC is still looking for a 10 day transmission window. It's 20. If Trump had half a brain, he would have asked the right questions, or had staff who would (rather than worrying about his moods.

Nate is right, it is too early to forecast exact Electoral College numbers. The Friday before the election is the best time. Two people predicted the exact number in 2012. Nate was one of them, and I was the other. The key is to throw out the GOP related numbers. They lie. Rachel Bitecofer will also make the right call this year.

Links for 10/6/2020

The only question on Barrett right now is if she has the votes and would it be good to make a stink about challenging her anyway. It is time to quit scoring points off of court nominations.

No one is sure about when Trump caught SARS-CoV-2. He already has the lung symptoms, which usually come 3 to 4 weeks after exposure - according to people who have had the disease, not the epidemiologists who have not asked us the key question - did you have a cold or allergies and when. The answer is about a week before SARS symptoms.

Trump probably caught this virus the weekend of September 11th. Unless he sneezed on the crowd, he did not spread it. Duluth had the virus already, so he did not give it to them. The people least likely to get sick in the DC area are those outside the Trump bubble. It has already blown through the DC area. Those susceptible to infection have already been sick. We have a second round circulating - which is actually just a cold.

The conservative anti-democratic project explains the anti-Catholic bigotry that MSW sometimes complains about. After Vatican I, the action shifted to being against Darwin - but Rome still had concerns about "Americanism" which were really concerns about whether our view of constitutional rights allowed error to have its place. After religious freedom spread to the Church at Vatican II, the action shifted to sex, where it remains to day. Barr is a sideshow.

The current action is still in the Pro-Life movement and the delusion that abortion can be treated as infanticide. In the late 1970s, the Evangelicals and Stoic Catholics formed an alliance that continues to pervert American politics for the sake of the Republican Party.  The other side show being Democrats for Life. They need to explain themselves. Do they merely witness, believe in punishing abortion as infanticide or are pushing for a larger Child Tax Credit? If they reject option 2, they are pro-choice. If they accept option 2, they cannot be Democrats.

Deutsche Bank and its relationship to Russia is the target of both Cy Vance and SDNY. Expect a ruling shortly, with comments about indicting a sitting President. The Second Circuit may be waiting until after the election to rule, which is another way to interfere with the election.

The Stoics are whistling in the dark. Fratelli, by not being sold as definitive doctrine, has neutered the concept that there is such a thing. What he says about religious freedom voids all the Anachronistic nonsense up to and including Veritatis Splendor.

All are welcome on the anti-Trump bandwagon, especially Puerto Ricans and suburban Republican women. In Pennsylvania, they are piling on. Kamala Harris will likely pull enough votes out of Philly to carry the state.

Freedom of the Press now seems to protect comedy acts, but too late for Lenny Bruce. See my comments above about the bad old days of pre-Vatican II Catholicism.

'Fratelli Tutti' challenges our country and our church

'Fratelli Tutti' challenges our country and our church

I will read the document in full when I get coffee with WiFi included. Blessed are the poor without a good connection.

The fact that Francis has switched from the language of the past to pastoral language is no accident. The past writings, many of which were argued from "first principles," were anachronistic The social encyclicals were less so, but Veritatis Splendor and Humanae/Evangeliium Vitae were a throwback to pre-Vatican II officiousness.

His attack on social media over personal contact is apt, even though ironic because this letter is published online. Argument over the net is dehumanizing. It is too easy to say things behind a computer that one would not say in person.

Francis is definitely attacking the neo-fascist leanings of the day. His remarks can also be applied to populist democratic socialism as well. We need more than slogans.

CUA is irrelevant. I am positive he was not aiming any broadsides in their direction, although they should take heed. Any response from them will be "who, me?"

Those of us on the left know exactly who he means by neoliberal. He hits the Clinton camp as hard as the Republicans, maybe harder. The whole There Is No Alternative ideology is soundly condemned. There may, indeed, be Marxists in the Vatican.

The Pope is condemning half measures. An inadequate child tax credit is no longer adequate. Equality means equality. If it takes $1000 a month per child to provide a good home and food, then a non-refundable tax credit of $233 is not enough.

It's time to bury the idea that demography is destiny, once and for all

It's time to bury the idea that demography is destiny, once and for all

Demography is almost destiny for women voting. They don't like Trump. Catholic women liked Clinton until she answered incorrectly on a partial birth abortion response to Trump, not the moderator.

Clinton got record turnout from Black women. Black working class men did not come out like they did for Obama. Not with Kaine on the ticket. For Booker, they would have come out. They may or may not now. It depends on how they view Harris.

Being CATHOLIC is a demographic too.

Demography may not be destiny, which is why it is so important. Biden needs to be careful about the Catholic vote on abortion. After the election, he needs to face it dead on by publicly scolding the USCCB for supporting a federalist policy that amounts to bringing back Plessy, as well as nurturing the dream that abortion be treated as infanticide lite. There is no getting around the due process concerns that view brings. Supporting a position that you know is impossible is a three letter word. It's called a lie.

Class is an important issue. There are four. The dependent class (which contains retirees, dependent workers and the working poor whose social benefits exceed their tax obligations) contained 40 million filers in 2017. The last year data were available.

The working class contains The working-class numbers 64 million households and pays $223 billion in taxes. Together, the dependent and working classes have $3 Trillion dollars in adjusted gross income (which does not include benefits paid, for the most part).

The middle class contains roughly 29 million households, almost all paying income tax. Their adjusted gross income is $3.5 Trillion. They pay $432 Billion in income taxes.

The upper class contains 7 million households, all of whom file, make $4 Trillion and pay $947 Billion in income taxes.

This table shows how debt assets are held (using 2016 data, the last available survey). The working class hold no bonds, not much in bonds backing savings and checking accounts, no direct bond holdings, 25% of financial assets backed by bonds and almost $4 Trillion in bonds contained in the Social Security and other government trust funds. These are mainly held for the dependent class who receive these benefits (there is no other way to track who owns such bonds than who is paid by them.

This table shows how debt assets are held (using 2016 data, the last available survey). The working class hold no bonds, $1 Trillion in public debt bonds backing savings and checking accounts held by the Federal Reserve, no direct bond holdings, almost $400 billion, or 10% of bonds backing financial assets and almost $4 Trillion in bonds contained in the Social Security and other government trust funds. These are mainly held for the dependent class who receive these benefits (there is no other way to track who owns such bonds than who is paid by them).
The middle-class bank deposits account for $1.3 Trillion in Federal Reserve bonds, half a trillion dollars in direct bond holdings, $1 Trillion in bonds backing investment accounts and $1.2 bonds in trust funds held by the government to distribute to high-income retirees.

The rich 5% of taxpaying households, or 8.5% of total households, hold the rest of the public debt and very little of the Social Security trust fund. This is why they fund studies examining how to control federal retirement costs. This translates into about half the bonds held by the Fed, almost all the bonds held by individuals or $3.7 Trillion, and two-thirds, or $2.4 of bonds held by financial accounts.

Just to put things in perspective, the revised Pareto rule is that for every $10 of income, $5 goes to 90% of any grouping, with the other $5 held by the top 10%. Studies show that it is the 90th percentile which keep up with inflation. Everyone else loses ground. The bottom 9.9% get most of their income from working. The top 0.1%, 143 thousand households, get more than half of their money from capital returns (table not shown). Being wealthy is having enough wealth to not work at all.

This table shows the distribution of income which validates the 90/10 rule. Note that just over 1,400 households bring in 2.5% of total AGI. This is almost half of the income going to the top 0.01% and a quarter of the income going to the top 0.1%. I call the elite .001% the mega-donor class. There are few major donors to politics or the Church (or NCR) in the working and middle classes.

Finally, we get to race. I cut off the middle class at 25% (or 20% of households), because of who does or does not own bonds.

As stated earlier, the working class, both white and everyone else, own no Treasuries, although they do hold low value savings bonds. The working minority working class holds almost $800 billion of the $900 billion in bond assets held by the Fed, 10% of the financial assets and a quarter of the Social Security fund assets (estimated, not counted, based on AGI).

The minority share of middle and upper-class debt assets proves most interesting. These are the people who own all the bonds. Minority bondholders hold essentially no bonds. Their share could only be calculated by noting how many Whites held bonds and subtract this from the total. In other words, they hold the rounding error. They hold 10% of the bonds held in financial assets and a slightly larger share of accounts backed by Federal Reserve bonds.

Minority citizens hold few bond assets. This is why most middle and upper-class minority households vote Democratic – or should do so. Why any white working-class households vote Republican is an oddity that cannot be explained by their economic interests. Upper class whites are likely never-Trumpers.

Reports are that the Trump Super PAC, which he lives on through its spending money on his properties, is heavily financed by Moscow, through Lev Parnas and Igor Furman (according to their indictments). The donor class will only give Trump money if he wins.

Demography may not be destiny, but economics and racism are. If it were not for racism, the White working class would all be supporting Biden.

Links for 10/1/20

Links for 10/1/20

Trump already lost his campaign manager. The question is, will Trump lose him or Mitch. Will they let the party die? Will Trump's creditors demand their cut once SDNY and Vance get their data? Now that would be an October surprise. Once SCOTUS denies certiorari, expect a run for the exists if disclosures indicate he is dead broke. The millionaire mystique that keeps his voters loyal can vanish more quickly than a checking account with Trump's name on it.

COVID is the CDC's fault. We shall see how effectively Trump can blame them for ignoring how "allergy symptoms" lead to SARS-2 symptoms.

Trump acknowledged than claimed no knowledge of the Proud Boys. They take that kind of treatment very seriously. This would be fun if lives were not in danger.

Barrett's rulings are capitalistic because the law is capitalistic. Her Charismatic affiliations cannot be questioned, period. Most rulings that affirm capitalism in the SCOTUS are unanimous. Revolution is always a do it yourself project - with the relevant selves being a disrespected middle class.

The theory of revolution of the poor leaves out the fact that poverty of circumstance and of the spirit are not mutually exclusive. This is why there are no revolutions against the Chinese Communist Party. No poor people were in the rooms that gave us the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Or Congress. Or the Courts. Or either political party (with the exception of Donald Trump - who i only rich on TV). The effort to get judges who rule for the powerful is bipartisan.

The polls that tell the truth, or push the truth, are internal campaign polls. They don't look good for Trump, hence the desperation moves. Even Fox News polls show Trump down. If their on-air talent turns against him, their viewers will quickly follow.

Catholic News Agency is best ignored except to always note that they are not to be confused with the Catholic News Service, which is an organ of the bishops. I am waiting for them to post a story about alien autopsies.

That being said, props to the CNA for outing Homeland Security policy changes allowing detainees access to abortion services (if not worse). They must not have gotten the memo that Trump is pro-life.
