Biden breaks through in 'mud wrestling' debate with Trump

Biden breaks through in 'mud wrestling' debate with Trump
I am glad my cable is off. I missed nothing from not watching, given what I have read about it. I wonder how Fox News is playing it. This is the only outfit he really trusts. The big loser in the room was not Trump, it was McConnell. The question is, was Trump acting or just being himself. Mike Pence need to pay attention to this point.

Trump's taxes, which I doubt he understands, may be the key to this election. There are two possibilities. Either he is the biggest user of tax benefits or the biggest loser of money. His base likes the second. They want the tax treatment he has. If it turns out he is actually broke, they will flee. His creditors could decide the election by demanding collateral very publicly. It would be the ultimate October surprise.

Would that the whole of the USCCB followed Blaise Cardinal Cupich's lead. When Cardinal O'Malley retires, Cupich would be the perfect member of the Council of 8.

I wonder how Judge Barrett's seminars dealt with labor law and capitalism. It would be an interesting question for her confirmation hearing. These questions are now fair game. Her faith itself is not - especially in the eyes of Midwestern Catholic voters. Hearings could either be quick, or she may say something that her GOP supporters don't like. I agree that Schumer should let this issue clear quickly.

Pro-Lifers of any stripe need to be clear, both to themselves and others, as to whether their views are a witness to life, political tribalism, religious tribalism, support for criminalizing abortion, or support for economic means or contraception to reduce the need for abortion. Women too. By the way, Roe is in no danger. Presumably, Barrett's constitutional law courses she taught at Notre Dame were designed to get her students ready for the Bar Exam.

People of Praise is a Charismatic movement. Don't mess with the Holy Spirit. Her participation is as off limits as a religious test as her Catholicism.

By the time of Plymouth, the extermination of Native Americans was already well underway. It is why the settlers were not driven into the sea. Most Puritans arrived on later ships, including my and Obama's ancestors.

Thanks for the Michaelmas reminder. I need to get an Angel Food cake to celebrate the Feast.

Don't you wish Trump had picked a Methodist for the Supreme Court?

Don't you wish Trump had picked a Methodist for the Supreme Court?

Barrett is more of a textualist than an originalist, although she is an expert in the latter. Gorsuch holds the same view and the Chief may as well.

There are two kinds if Republican appointees. One kind says the right things and the others are true believers. She seems like the second. For every Scalia, there is a Souter. Plot it out if you won't take my word for it.

As far as her esoteric Charismatic theology, as long as she does not speak in tongues at oral arguments or in Friday Conference, it won't be a problem.

There are lots of executive branch alums on the Court, including Roberts, Kagan and Kavanaugh. If you want an elected official, I am sure Obama is available. Bill and Hillary are too old, although MSW did call Hillary a Methodist church lady in 2016.

Why aren't pollsters asking how religion affects Latinos' voting?

Why aren't pollsters asking how religion affects Latinos' voting?

They are probably asking. They are simply not publishing the cross tabs. I promise you the internal polling will.

When I was a kid in Texas, Cubans were a new thing, Puerto Ricans were in New York, there were no Central Americans and Latinos were generally called Mexicans or Tejanos, the latter being a current word as well and referring to people who were in Texas before either the Tennesseans or the Santa Anna. In those days, we were taught some Spanish, but in public schools, speaking Spanish was not allowed.

It was only in 1955 that Hispanics were not considered inferior Whites, subject to discrimination in policing (as if that has changed) and in jury selection. Hernandez v. Texas tried to change that, but Courts do not change attitudes, even among the police.

Older Latino Catholics liked Reagan, probably because of the 1986 Amnesty. Bush 43 was trying for the same thing, but the racist Republican caucus in the House would have none of it. As for recent immigrants, they reflect the fact that the Church in Latin America is seen as favoring the rich, light-skinned demographics, with the Pentecostals filling the need for ministers.

The young are as likely to be Nones as any of their peers. Some young Latinos still cross themselves and kiss their fingers as a prayer against misfortune. Immigrants brought their religion and class issues with them.  Quite a few are undocumented. There were 11 million, but 2008 sent some to greener pastures back home.

If anyone might do a poll, it would be NBC/Telemundo. That may have some religious cross-tabs and the right amount of sampling. If you are really concerned, send a copy of your column to Jose' Diaz-Balart.

And quit obsessing about abortion politics - it is an indicator but there is absolutely no electoral angle or workable legislation. None, zero, zip, nada. Interview Chief Justice Roberts and he will explain why it would violate both federal supremacy and due process. These issues may come up in the next few weeks in the Barrett hearings.

The GOP commentariat, at least the Trump supporters, have adopted the party line - hook line and sinker, including Putin's propaganda. As for Texas and Florida, don't be so sure they are not in play for Biden. Even that other NCR cannot avoid how much trouble he is in which is why he is hoping to use the Barrett nomination to have Democratic Senator rally the pro-life fence sitters in the Midwest.

Which is worse, the madness of COVID fear or the madness of culture warrior bishops  like Cordeleone who think the can outlast Pope Francis?

In Chicago, it sounds more like the the Mayor is the one reaching out to the Church. This comes right out of the Daley playbook.

I suspect that the Pennsylvania court ruling will be appealed. The Secretary of State sounds like a good egg. I am voting in person in Maryland because my signature is so bad. I also have no fear of a virus I already have, nor of line for early voting. Doing so is now largely seen as an act of defiance against Trump.

Schumer would be best to let the Barrett nomination go through. A textualist is, by nature, centrist. Defusing the issue now prevents backlash from bishops and Catholic voters, who are nothing if not tribal.

I wonder if swing state never-Trumpers are responsible for more voter registration - or voting in local partisan primaries. These things need to be looked at up close. All politics is local. On working class issues, there is no one better than Biden. The Bernie folks were registered from previous years, so forgiving college debt is still a big thing (unless they are protest voting as Greens). They won't ever vote GOP.

How will Ginsburg's death affect the election?

How will Ginsburg's death affect the election?

It is not the base Trump wants to get, but the marginally pro-life voters in the Midwest. He especially wants a fight where Senators Feinstein and Schumer go hard on Barrett or any other pro-life nominee, although I don't see any qualified judge opt for overturning Roe. On both equal protection and federal power grounds, it is settled law. Only Scalia wanted to send the issue back to the states.

The best thing that Schumer can do for the election, as I wrote yesterday, is to approve it by consent. Even announcing that he will will give pause to the same people who balked at Miers. Alito and Thomas are old enough, as is Breyer, to give Biden the running room on the Court. The real issue is capitalism. The Court supports it 100%, because the law does. Bummer that.

The best October surprise for Biden would be GRUdi under indictment. The second best thing is for the issue to be raised hard. Winning the debates and the post debate coverage is also key. We shall see.

Justice Ginsberg's death will give tempt the USCCB Office of Pro-Life Activities and certain bishops to exercise reverse Simony that they will be unable to resist. Cardinal Sean, call your office!

Joe Biden is losing the Cuban vote in Florida because Trump is calling him a Communist. This is not news.

Democrats for life need to say exactly what moderating the Democratic message should be. Do they want just a little criminalization of abortion? If not, they are pro-choice in all but their witness. Words have meanings, even if you resist their implications.

The October Surprise this year will be an indictment of Trump and/or his children. Any attempt he may make will be has ham-fisted as the rest of his presidency.

When the General Instructions for the Roman Missal come out, was there consultation? I do not think so. How about the amended translation of the liturgy? Nope. A traditionalist parish may object to removing the Communion rail, but sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Wood may or may not be better. It depends upon whether more fire resistant aluminum roof struts would increase the possibility that a fire could become an explosion due to pressure buildup. At minimum, the towers should include a sprinkler system to protect the existing beams.

What does it say about Catholics that Trump thinks they're key to winning?

What does it say about Catholics that Trump thinks they're key to winning?

The appeal to forgiving college debt is all about those of us in our 50s who still have college debt - indeed - we owe more now than we did in our 40s. Some may die with it or, worse, have lower Social Security benefits because of this. The other reason is that Biden wants Sanders voters, rather than having them go Green.

As to the question at hand, it says that Catholic voters who Trump seeks are the useful idiots to back the bishops in their quest for power within the Republican Party. On gay marriage, most Catholics have come around. It seems everyone has a gay friend, child or parent. It is the bishops who are demanding that employees who marry in some secular marriages (gay) be fired while those in others (hetero) are not. Sour grapes.

Trump thinks his road to victory passes through the Catholic Church

Trump thinks his road to victory passes through the Catholic Church

Trump is correct. It is not that he is relying on the bishops, it is that the bishops are relying on him. Biden simply does not have the courage to call the USCCB Office of Pro-Life Activities out for doing so. Somebody needs to, in no uncertain terms. Obama Catholic surrogates did it quietly and neutralized their influence. It needs to be a public conversation. The stakes are too high for it not to be.

Fallows is right. Trump is committing espionage in plain sight. Mueller chose to let others deal with it. Not a winning move. Nothing else Trump did was that serious - but being a Russian agent should have been prosecuted by Mueller and Schiff.

It turns out that the Trumpist Boogaloo Bois are the ones breaking the windows. There are not enough of them to mess up the election, especially this one.

Barr is not hired as a religious leader. His views on theology don't matter at all. There is no religious test for office.  I am still not convinced he is not Mueller's inside man - although I am not sure Mueller is that strategic.

Biden's problem with Latinos in Florida is the Cubans, not the Puerto Ricans. Only the Cubans fall for anti-communist dog whistles. They would never vote for Biden anyway. If you look for bad news, you will always find it.

Is the Georgia case about eugenics or HPV. This is serious enough to look rather than speculate. This is not something that would come from the desk of Stephen Miller (and if it did, he had better stay home from Synagogue on Saturday).

Does Catholic political involvement contribute to sectarianism?

Does Catholic political involvement contribute to sectarianism?

The term of art is partisan. Sectarianism is what happens when people leave or expel others. The Church has been partisan since James and Johns asked for thrones at Jesus side in the kingdom. We saw it in the epistles of Paul, in the Council at Jerusalem, in Revelation (remnants of the Jerusalem church complaining about the Paulist Church), Clement of Antioch in 100 AD.

Many of these conflicts are regional, like in the U.S., and reflect the flock as much as the Bishops. In the early modern era, the Vatican consolidated power to compensate for losing Italy to Garibaldi until Vatican II ended that. St. John Paul was a voice of discord at the Council and a counter-revolutionary Pope.

The GOP played into those divisions and the USCCB members and staff on the right were more than happy to play ball. That is what is playing out now. If there were no debate and active subversion, I would check the sky for Jesus returning.

The Catholic News Agency is fringe on astroturf. The Register is not much better. Their only value is that they reflect how some bishops actually think (see my comments from yesterday).

Independents change parties to vote in one primary or the other. That did not happen this year because by the time PA voted, the nomination in both parties was settled. Putting Kamala on the ticket gets Philly turnout numbers to where they need to be. Fear is the mind killer.

Some Latino voter have abortion on their minds. Until being a pro-life Republican is seen as a GOP get out the vote mechanism, this will be a problem. At some point, Biden needs to call out the bishops for their support of this scam, although that too has risks - not for getting loyal Democrats to the polls, but with marginal Catholic voters. If possible, he should wait until after the election.

Kerry was a bad candidate. The comparison between the two is the perception that each was nominated because it was their turn. Hillary Clinton faced the same issue.

It is more likely that SARS-2 deaths are under-reported. In Iowa, the widespread illness and dying from it has not really started yet. When it does, she will rue the day she mentioned the issue.

Unless ICE troops become election thugs, the Virginia story won't have legs. They won't be. The virus has already burned through Virginia. Those who are vulnerable are mostly on the mend now.

Trump's racism will not only be a presidential landslide, it will cost the GOP more down ballot. See 2018.

Deep fried anything converts the complex carbs to sugar. Yikes!

Don't let this be your last vote

Don't let this be your last vote

Put not your faith in princes of the Church, many of whom are rabid Republicans who believe the ends justify the means and whose knowledge of American constitutionalism is totally lacking. Whether they are well advised or impervious to truth does not matter. To be fair, no one has taken pains to instruct them - but this essay is a start. They are also in the same position on abortion as the bishops 100 years ago were on the phantom Americanist heresy.

Trump has been the perfect foil for Democrats who need people to vote early, especially by mail. The reality is that no one cares about the quips on social media from overseas. What is important is that no one in the electoral system will abet any effort by Trump to steal the election. He is simply regurgitating Fox News narrative. It is his role in our national drama. I doubt he even believes half the things he says or tweets.

The Woodward tapes show that he is not as vacuous as people think. By now, he has to suspect that his office does not prevent his prosecution or investigation, but it is reasonable to expect that nothing will happen by election day. No judge wants to be accused of stealing the election either. There could be a deal on the table now. When he loses (and the likely electoral vote count in RCP is in the mid-300s with no tossups) his leverage evaporates. Trump should take it and see how Pence does.

This time Trump's lie will matter

This time Trump's lie will matter

Actually, anyone who did not get their toilet paper before it ran out agrees that panic occurred and that avoiding it was a worthy goal. The only Trump SARS2 sin was the fact that his staff caters to his whims rather than provides effective oversight.

The CDC is still trying to not say the virus is a cold, so it is not recommending using heavy sneezes or hay fever as a screening question. That is what has spread the virus - not opening bars or not wearing masks. An effective staff would have called foul and forced the CDC to admit that all coronaviruses, even new ones, start as colds.

Trump's problem is that he showed that he is not a total idiot - that he was listening to the facts and made a judgment that had a reasonable explanation. In other words, he can't play dumb anymore. That is the issue that will haunt him. A pathological lie is one thing - a deliberate one is how Washington does business.

In Miami, it's the Cubans. For any poll, how you weight the data matters. At this stage, most news outlets use whatever definition of likely voter lets them report that things are close. Campaigns like this because it keeps people voting. Security experts raise alarms. It's what they do. It is not up to the Bishops to talk about voter security - it's not what they do.

Sandel is not correct. If his assumptions were correct, McCarthy would be Speaker. MSW is cherry picking his information. Trump won because he told people what they wanted to hear and had an opponent who made one mistake too many.

Until the police union is decertified, any reform is window dressing.

Until voters and elites decide to alter arrangements, the elites in P.R. will keep the people poor. The island needs to join a union of Central American and Caribbean nations. The status quo is neo-liberal

Spadaro describes Francis as a discerning pope, without preset program

Spadaro describes Francis as a discerning pope, without preset program Any Francis critics who think that this article is an excuse of inactivity are not familiar with the Spiritual Exercises and are whistling in the dark passed the graveyard. Spirituality includes the ability to act as radically as required. Francis is firmly committed. Such commitment is why the Jesuits have instilled both scorn and fear in those who would oppose their work.

Between changes in the Curia (which should be understood in the context of having the Council of 9 - including Francis) and the newly announced encyclical about fraternal love toward the poor, there is no sign of the Holy Father slowing down with age. He is, if anything, speeding up. It is said that Christianity would be great if ever tried. We are about to really try it this time.

What is truly shameless is that no one who received these illegal donations (or the ones financed by the Trump SuperPAC using Moscow money) have given them back. Let's see what October brings. Hopefully 2021 will bring FEC reform with teeth.

That the convention infomercials did not have an effect is no shock. In a world of negative partisanship, they can't. People are locked in. Police reform's 15 minutes of fame (and the associated protests) have passed. A weekly or nightly march goes from news to exercise fairly quickly.

Mail in ballots counted prior to election day are announced when the polls close. It will be interesting to see how long the networks can drag out the results to not have them affect California voting. Arizona may be a referendum on Gabby, but if it results in making AZ a blue state, stick a fork in the GOP - it's done.

The same can be said for some of the St. John Paul bishops. Whether the people in the pews move (or return in the age of COVID) is a serious matter for the Church. Europe never recovered. Fr. Spadaro's comments are evocative and very Jesuit. They seem to be baptizing deep change This is why the Jesuits have always been considered dangerous throughout their history. The scripture to not be like the gentiles in governing the Church is very dangerous to the status quo. Interesting.

Solidarity is key to organized labor and the revival of community

Solidarity is key to organized labor and the revival of community

Liberty is one of the four ways of life. It is the opposite of hierarchy. Like Equality, it is voluntary and is against status and rules. Like Despotism, it features the individual, but the individual in despotism is dominated by rules, while the libertarian is not. The history of culture is that mixed cultures are healthy while mono-cultures breed dysfunction. Real science depends on free thought and research, not conformity. Conformity is the error of science.

In the current pandemic, the CDC is wed to masking, but their model of the virus is off by two weeks - as in between exposure to SARS2 symptoms. The reality is that this period is four weeks - two from exposure to nasal symptoms (which last a week), with a week of asymptomatic spread.

Challenging the official line is seen as being Trumpist. It is not. People are not dying for liberty, they are dying for error. Likewise, science is the usual enemy of fear, which is an aspect of despotism. Fear is keeping children home from school, even though they do not spread to adults, do not get sick, save for a cold, and that sterilizing every surface is not necessary. You breath the virus. It happens spreads from being sneezed on, yet even now, screeners do not ask people if they have been sneezing.

Fear tells them that their sneezes were allergies, not the virus. People with the virus, including those of us who have recovered, are seen as contagious, even after we are a source of immunity. There is no such thing as a light case. Getting a cold or respiratory symptoms that do not turn into major fatigue is exposure, not infection. Infection knocks a person out for two weeks. You can have a light infection, but until you have fatigue, you are vulnerable to the real thing. After the real thing, you can still get a cold - which results in a positive test for PAN-COVID, which catches all bat viruses.

The most dangerous part of solidarity is that the experts do not actually listen to those who have had it - their solidarity is with other professionals, not patients. This is what will cause up to 500,000 people to die. We are doing Sweden, although unintentionally.

Church going in the 1960s was a product of despotism - of being afraid to not conform. Many people who went to Church believed in the belief of God. They had no real chance of bearing fruit. That despotism is what leads to the backlash of empty pews and Churches.

Strong labor comes not from hierarchy, but from equality. It is a revolt against the bosses. Solidarity among workers, in its natural progression, leads to the democratic election of the bosses and a more equal wage structure. I am all for that, especially if it includes the room for individuals to push the envelope toward innovation. The labor movement has not yet gotten there yet.

Post COVID, a demand for higher minimum wages are natural after the higher benefits granted during the pandemic. These benefits have led to both savings, to deal with uncertainty, and individualistic consumption. Without the latter, there is no demand for justice.

Our morally unserious president on display in Kenosha

Our morally unserious president on display in Kenosha

Donald Trump is deadly serious about the message he is conveying. Whether it is because he is a wannabe dictator (attempting to be the real thing) or is simply pandering to the lesser angels of his base is not important. His intention to stay in office to avoid an inquiry into the Trump family finances is so pathetic, it's comedy (there is no such immunity). What is important is that the person who should have removed him years ago for his ineptitude and bad intentions has not and will not do so. Mike Pence has chosen to be Trump's sin eater. He must have one heck of an appetite, for there is much for him to eat. Barr is just a supporting character, not even worth a footnote.

Not oversampling minority test subjects could be bad science, although it would also be met with the complaint that we are using them as lab rats. If you look for racism, you will find it. I am more anti-racist than most, but because this is an urban virus (for now), people of color have had the worst of it. For now. White America should not think that it is coming for them too.

The meme of White victim-hood does not make it hard to find the racists. In the era of Trump, they are the loudest voices. They are amplified by the money of the rich, who need tax cuts to create Ponzi schemes to extract money from the poor and as incentive to keep labor costs (wages) down. Whip Inflation Now.

The movement to give more money to the bosses started with Jack Kennedy's tax cuts. It turns out the Camelot was a good name for an administration which started the upward distribution of wealth. Ed Markey gave us the very dark mornings of mid-Fall and early-Spring. He is the kind of environmentalist that makes environmentalism a hard sell. Almost nothing is worse than a Senator over the age of 70 (except a dynasty). Mr. Kennedy should have waiting for Ed or Elizabeth to vacate before running. Mitt made the same mistake in 2012. I detect a pattern.

Fascism is easy to define. When the movement becomes the man, welcome to fascism. His enemies are the enemy of the state because the leader is the state. This year, we don't have far to look. It's not just Trump. Just go to work and see celebrity CEOs indulge in it too - or any Cathedral.

Book offers voting Catholics alternative to bishops' 'Faithful Citizenship'

Book offers voting Catholics alternative to bishops' 'Faithful Citizenship'

Faithful Citizenship claims to be authoritative guidance and is a letter, not a book. An alternative would have to attack its flaws as a consensus statement. An anthology by academics does not cut it for voters, but it could do good if aimed at the Bishops. Such a text needs to analyze and shame the naked partisanship of the letter and explain the issue in terms of what is possible, not what is moral.

Let's not kid ourselves about the nature of Faithful Citizenship. It was originally drafted by the Office of Pro-Life Activities, probably by Richard Doerflinger. Like me, he is a political hack, not a theologian. Any analysis that leaves that fact out is hopelessly flawed.

There must be a clarification of the rights the unborn already possess (to not be executed) and the nature of not being murdered as a positive right. The consequences of the latter need to be laid out in great detail, as well as its impossibility. There is no way to constitutionally investigate abortion without investigating all pregnancy loss or punishing doctors and not those who hire them. This issue has been settled for 47 years. It is time for the bishops to admit it.

The morality of voting pro-life must be tempered by the impossibility of doing so, at least as far as the criminal law. What is possible is an economic solution. This is what Pius Pope XI requires of the Church. The bishops need a reminder. Direct subsidies are preferred over worker rights. Pope Benedict has made this clear. There is remarkable consensus between the political parties on giving money to families. Opposing subsidies as "socialism" is at odds with doctrine. This must be made clear to Catholic voters.

The question for voters is how much money and how it is targeted. The Democrats win that round. Economic policy is the meat of any electoral choice, so prudential judgment goes out the window, as do questions of conscience.

These are questions of economics, law and science. The theological question is how one's position on abortion and economics is related to their conception of God. We create God in our image, not the other way around. The dogma of God may be based on revealed truth, but its credal expression is a shared reality based on agreement.A wider knowledge of scripture is showing that the fearsome God of St. Anselm simply does not exist. Our Lord is gentle and humble of heart. His yoke is easy and his burden, light.

Research shows that the availability of contraception, possibly even more than financial assistance, is the best cure for abortion. The science is clear on whether chemical birth control takes a life (it does not). The bishops are simply wrong. An embryologist should be engaged to convince them why. Such a discussion is entirely a matter of natural reason (rather than the authority of the Holy See, which is based on fallacy and superstition). The question of Dogma to be addressed is whether the Church is protected from error in this matter. The answer is no.

Discussing all of this in parish social ministry groups is risky. Speaking truth to power always is. The accompanying discussion should also focus on whether the Medieval governance structures of the Church should be maintained. That answer is no as well, but the people must find their power. It has been theirs all along.

There is nothing mainstream about Arroyo. He is too fringe to even cover.

Connecticut is hardly a bell weather state, especially in the sticks. Unless the nation can handle 200,000 more SARS2 deaths by election day or Trump can make GRUdi the fall guy, there is ample news in October to ruin Trump. Biden must have a guy in NCR, because he has already been to Kenosha.

If the lay board in Orange County was fired en masse, chances are they were doing something right.

No Republican will ever win the Black vote. Too few have been given the asset stream that White executives get. Biden's support is solid and Kamala was not selected to attract it.

The news from England shows what a class of ministry professionals can do, regardless of who is P.M. We need to follow their lead. The GOP could have used a professional cadre to limit the current Trumpster fire.

Everyone is covering Ms. Vicky. Luckily, few area following her lead, but it only takes a few to get the cameras rolling.
