Papa Luciani Speaks  by MSW.  MGB: I suspect we would have had a vernacular Mass, but it would have been a straight translation rather than a paraphrase - akin to what we have now.  Blessed John XXIII was picked because he was old and all of the Popes have been foretold by St. Malachy - including this one, the next one and none after that.  Whether these prophesies are valid or not, there is some evidence that they have some currency behind Vatican walls - hence Blessed John Paul II's attempt to purify the Church for the last days (as opposed to a more realistic recognition that perhaps the Archbishop of New Rome is at least co-heir, if not sole heir, to St. Peter after all.  My bet is on the latter and in the current Pope taking us in that direction.  All these things, as all things, are in God's plan.  They work out as intended.  Those thinking otherwise need to talk to the Jesuits about spirituality and do some exercising.
