The Rio Olympics: Have fun | National Catholic Reporter

The Rio Olympics: Have fun | National Catholic Reporter by MSW. MGB: Rio in the winter is lovely, which it is right now.  It is not so different in the summer.  It is good to watch the athletes and the fans having fun, especially on the road race courses, where no one can charge you admission to see it - although most people photograph it as much as watch it, which is another bit of competition over fun.  I am glad to see the althletes are having fun too, there is no conflict between enjoying yourself and being excellent.

The ceremonial depictions of national pride are new, but they attract viewers.  The reason Matt Lauer had the descriptions is that the broadcasters need this kind of show to get people to watch, although the parade of nations is nice too and those of us old enough to remember Montreal know the other components, like the lighting of the torch and the althletes' and judges' oaths.

I suppose it does not matter where you hold the games.  In the era of rich white people, they will fly whereever and spend whatever to get good seats.  I think it's easier to stream the video from the NBC page. I doubt many working class vacationers put the Olympics on their itinerary, if they get vacation at all.  As for the suggestion that Summer games only be held in Greece, no one is holding any venue's feet to the fire to host, although lets hope that the TV revenue is forced as an offset for the venue construction costs.  Such stadia are luxuries best fueled by the plutocrats who benefit from them, much like many American football venues which the League forces cities to construct.
