He was part of the California bishops conference in the years when Proposition 8 was attacked and overturned, where their argument utilizing Catholic views on gender doctrine were laughed out of court, from the San Francisco District to the U.S. Supreme Court. The bishop's position on contraception was hardly a slam dunk. It did more to embarrass the bishops than witness to Christ. They seek religious power, not religious freedom. This should be said more - especially in court.
